However, there are some pages that should not be crawled. These pages can detract from the time and effort you invest into developing unique and beautiful content. With that in mind, you’ll need to know how to properly notify search engine crawlers that you don’t want them to index your site.
What is NoIndex?
NoIndex is a meta tag that is put to a web page’s header code to inform search engines that, while they can scan the page to comprehend its content, they cannot index it to appear in search engine results.
How to apply NOINDEX in the Robots Meta Tag?
The meta robots tag, sometimes known as “meta robots,” is a part of a page’s HTML code. It may be found in the part of every web page. It’s used to offer search engine crawlers and bots instructions. And “noindex” is one of the numerous directives you can use to tell search engine bots what to do.
You may tell search engines not to index this page by adding “noindex” to the meta robots tag. “Not to index a page” indicates that this page (remote URL) will not appear in their list of search results. You can provide this command to all web crawlers or just a few of them.
If you don’t want this page to be indexed by any search engines, change the meta robots tag to something like this:

If you just want Google web crawlers to index this page, change the name property to the name of the crawler you’re targeting:
Instead of naming individual crawlers, I recommend using meta name=”robots” because search engines have different crawlers for different reasons.
Web pages are designed to be indexed by default. As a result, when you use a content management system like WordPress to create a new page or post, you won’t see a meta robot tag in the HTML code. The robots tag should appear in the <head> HTML code section as soon as you add a directive to it, such as “nofollow,” “noindex,” “disallow,” and so on.
What is NoFollow?
NoFollow is a meta tag that advises search engines not to follow the links on a website. It is put to the header code of a web page. This effectively disavows the page’s links and tells the search engine not to pass any authority or “link juice” to the pages linked within your content.
How to apply NoFollow in the Robots Meta Tag?
Nofollow may be added to the robots meta tag in the same way that Noindex can.
When you use this method, you’re telling search engine bots (most notably Googlebot) to ignore the links on this page and not transmit link equity through any of the connections on the page. The implementation in a meta tag is identical to that described above, with the exception that the directive “noindex” is replaced with “nofollow.”
You can add: if you want the nofollow rule to apply to all search engine crawlers.
How are they Different?
In terms of functionality, NoIndex and NoFollow are very different. When telling a search engine not to keep your web page for display in search results, you’ll use NoIndex, and when telling search engine crawlers not to follow the links on your page, you’ll use NoFollow. As a result, NoIndex refers to your web page, whereas NoFollow refers to the links on your web page.
Why not use Disallow and Noindex together?
This is a common question I hear from my clients, and I’d want to explain it in this blog so that everyone understands. You may play around with the Noindex option to prevent search engines from indexing your sites. The combination of Disallow and Noindex directives on an HTML page, on the other hand, is not conceivable since the information included in the disabled page for crawling cannot be located or read. Only the forbid command on the robot.txt page and the noindex in the HTML tag’s header can be configured independently.
When the robots come upon a new page that has the Disallow directive, the page is not investigated further. When search engines find this page with the Noindex tag, they will deindex it because it was crawled from previously crawled and indexed URLs. As a result, this page will no longer appear in search engine results, making further investigation impossible.
In summary, the robots.txt file setting Disallow + Noindex tends to solve the problem of preventing sites from being crawled and deindexing them if they are found in search engine indexes.
